Pakistan summons US envoy over Kashmir remarks

Pakistan summoned Washington's top envoy in Islamabad after the US ambassador to India described disputed Kashmir as “an important part of India,” Pakistan's foreign ministry said.

The ministry said late Wednesday that it lodged a strong demarche over what it called “factually incorrect remarks” by Sergio Gor, the US ambassador in New Delhi, about Jammu and Kashmir. It said it underscored that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognised disputed territory.

Gor made the comments to reporters in Srinagar during a visit to Indian-administered Kashmir. Referring to a meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, he said it had been “very good” and that he looked forward to building the relationship.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and has been at the centre of rivalry between the two countries since their independence from British rule in 1947.

The latest conflict between the neighbours is over Delhi's suspension of its involvement in the Indus Waters Treaty after a deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir in April 2025. New Delhi blamed Islamabad for backing the attack, which Islamabad denies. The two countries exchanged drone, missile and artillery fire the following month, leaving nearly 70 people dead on both sides.
