Pakistan house collapse kills 11 in Lahore monsoon

A house collapsed during heavy monsoon rains in Lahore, killing 11 people from the same family and injuring six others, a local official said Thursday.

Amir Butt, the assistant commissioner in the area, said all the victims belonged to one family. Rescue services searched the damaged site in the tightly packed neighbourhood and retrieved bodies, while residents comforted each other nearby, AFP journalists saw.

Ali Ahmed, 37, who lived near the collapsed home, said his family was jolted by a loud bang "like an explosion" the previous evening. He said one section of the building collapsed first, then two other sections came down onto the ground floor as people began screaming.

Flood-related incidents, including drowning and house collapses, have killed 121 people in Pakistan since June 26, according to official disaster agency figures.

Heavy monsoon rains also flooded around a dozen villages near Lahore this week, forcing residents to leave their homes by boat across fields covered in water.
