Pakistan detains 258 foreigners in Islamabad scam raid
Pakistan authorities said Monday they had detained 258 foreigners after a raid on an alleged scam call centre in Islamabad.
An official from the Federal Investigation Agency told AFP the centre was operating in Gulberg Green, a housing society on the outskirts of the capital. The official said those detained had entered Pakistan on tourist visas and were not allowed to do the work alleged.
The detainees included 40 Chinese nationals and 170 people from Vietnam, as well as people from Malaysia and other Asian countries, the official said. They were being held at a jail in Rawalpindi.
The official said the relevant embassies had been informed and that details of the allegations would be released in the coming days because the investigation was ongoing. Deportation was among the possible outcomes, the official added.
AFP has asked China’s foreign ministry for comment on the detentions.
Uncertainty notes
The detailed allegations against the detainees have not yet been released.
The investigation is ongoing.
Possible deportations have not been confirmed as final decisions.
The exact timing of the detentions is unclear; media reports cited in the supplied material said the foreigners were detained last week.
