Pakistan army chief to visit Iran as mediation stalls

Pakistan's army chief Asim Munir is due to travel to Tehran on Aug. 24, Iran's foreign ministry said, as Islamabad continues efforts to help resolve the war between Iran and the United States and negotiations appear stalled.

Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Sunday that Munir would lead a delegation to the Iranian capital as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between Iran and Pakistan.

The ministry said the visit was also part of Pakistan's efforts to help consolidate peace and security in the region.

Pakistan brokered a memorandum of understanding in June as part of efforts to halt the war between Iran and the United States. Earlier this month, Pakistan signed a joint defence agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Uncertainty notes

The item describes the visit as planned; it has not yet taken place.
