Norway's King Harald remains in hospital, cancels visit

Norway's 89-year-old King Harald will remain at Oslo University Hospital for further treatment and has cancelled a Sept. 1-2 visit to Trondelag, the palace said on Aug. 21.

The palace said Harald is being treated for haemolytic anaemia, a condition involving abnormally rapid destruction of red blood cells. He was admitted on Aug. 17 because of fluid retention linked to cortisone treatment and had been placed on sick leave for two weeks.

Crown Prince Haakon, Harald's son, is serving as regent in his absence. Harald, who became king in 1991, has had several health problems in recent years but has repeatedly ruled out abdicating.
