Nintendo profit jumps 53.5% despite slower Switch 2 sales
Nintendo said its net profit rose 53.5% year on year to 147.4 billion yen, or $930 million, in the April-June quarter, helped by increased video game sales and refunds of US tariffs, while sales of its Switch 2 console slowed.
The Japanese gaming company kept its annual profit forecast at 310 billion yen. The quarterly profit was above the 77.8 billion yen estimated in a Bloomberg survey of analysts.
Nintendo said overall sales in its dedicated video game platform business fell 13.1%, mainly because of lower Switch 2 sales. It expects to sell 16.5 million Switch 2 units in the 2026-27 financial year, about 17% fewer than in 2025-26.
The company said software sales were solid and highlighted two Switch 2 titles: Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, which sold nearly eight million copies, and Pokemon Pokopia.
Nintendo said in May it would raise the price of the console as memory chip prices rise. It said Thursday that Switch 2 sales remained strong and that it aimed to maintain momentum for the hardware and software.
The company also cited The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as a bright spot. The film, released in April, has become this year's fourth top-grossing film worldwide, according to IMDBPro.
Nintendo said in June it would remake The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2. UBS analysts said before the earnings release that 2026 titles such as the Zelda remake should draw attention, but said the pipeline still lacked a clear blockbuster title to accelerate Switch 2 adoption materially.
