Naples earthquake injures 21 in Campi Flegrei

A 4.7-magnitude earthquake in the Campi Flegrei area west of Naples injured 21 people and damaged properties, Italian authorities said on Saturday.

Italy's Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the quake occurred late Friday, July 31, at a depth of three kilometres. The area is the site of Europe's largest volcanic crater and has frequent seismic activity.

Italy's civil protection service said two of the injured people required emergency hospital treatment.

Nello Musumeci, Italy's minister for civil protection, said the earthquake caused the collapse of several unoccupied buildings and landslides. Lower-intensity aftershocks followed overnight.
