Myanmar floods kill at least 3, Arakan Army says

Floods in western Myanmar have killed at least three people, according to a toll released by the humanitarian services of the Arakan Army, as rescuers warned on July 11 that water levels could rise further in Rakhine and Chin states.

The Arakan Army is an ethnic minority rebel group controlling the affected territory. Local rescuer Bo Aung Thein said evacuating elderly people, sick people, pregnant people and residents in low-lying areas was a concern if waters rose.

Residents described widespread flooding in villages in Kyauktaw Township. May Thein Yaine said almost all of about 200 houses in Kyauk Kyat village were submerged, along with paddy fields.

Myanmar has been in civil war since a 2021 military coup, and the United Nations says transport and communication problems are widespread and more than a third of the population faces food insecurity.
