Minnesota water systems hit by suspected Iran-linked hackers
Cyberattacks on around 30 local water systems in Minnesota disrupted supply in the small town of Braham for about two hours, US media reports said, with investigators seeing signs that point to a hacker group affiliated with Iran.
The attacks took place on Sunday and Monday, according to the reports, which cited a security firm and US investigators. Service in Braham, in the greater Minneapolis area, was restored after the disruption.
Cybersecurity firm Tenable said the method used in the attack was consistent with CyberAv3ngers, a cybercriminal group that the US government accuses of operating under Tehran's control.
US authorities also suspect Iranian hackers, but responsibility has not been formally established. The FBI did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment.
On July 22, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency warned of activity by Iran-affiliated organisations against online control systems for infrastructure in the United States.
