Pakistan military says 15 killed in attack on security post
Pakistan's military said on Friday that militants rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a security check post in north-western Pakistan overnight, killing 15 people.
The military's media wing said the dead included 12 military personnel, two policemen and a government official linked in the statement to the forest department. It said the attack happened in Tank district, in the border province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the military, security forces killed 12 militants during the attack. The military said the attackers drove the explosives-laden vehicle into the perimeter wall and that the blast seriously damaged infrastructure at the post.
No group immediately claimed responsibility.
The report said the area has been affected by a growing violent campaign by the Islamist militant Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan group. Pakistan has previously blamed increased attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan on militancy coming from Afghanistan. Afghanistan's Taliban government denies Afghan involvement.
Those accusations have contributed to a rift and armed conflict between the neighbouring countries. Pakistan has carried out deadly airstrikes that it says target militants on Afghan soil. The Taliban government and the United Nations said dozens of civilians were killed in the latest Pakistani strikes on eastern Afghanistan in June.
