Microsoft and Mistral agree European AI computing deal
Microsoft and French AI developer Mistral said Tuesday that they had reached a multi-billion-dollar agreement for Microsoft to rent AI infrastructure from Mistral in Europe.
The companies said in a joint statement that the deal would strengthen Europe's AI infrastructure and help Microsoft meet rising demand for cloud and AI services on the continent. Mistral's own AI models will also be offered directly to Microsoft clients through tools including the Copilot AI assistant.
The companies did not give the exact dollar value of the agreement or say how much computing power Mistral will provide. Mistral has targeted 200 megawatts of capacity by 2027 and aims to reach one gigawatt by 2030, a level the source described as roughly equal to the output of one of France's nuclear reactors.
Mistral said the tie-up gives it more visibility to speed up financing and development of Mistral Compute, its cloud and AI infrastructure business. The company was founded three years ago, has 1,000 staff and is investing four billion euros, or $4.6 billion, in data centres in France and Europe. One data centre is already operating outside Paris and another is being built in Sweden.
The source said Mistral's plans remain smaller than the hundreds of billions of dollars and gigawatts of computing capacity being built by American firms. It said Mistral is joining other generative AI developers that are selling computing power to outside users as the industry expands and high-end chips remain scarce.
The report cited examples including a May deal between Elon Musk's SpaceXAI and Anthropic. It also said Anthropic, the AI lab behind the Claude chatbot, is in talks for a deal worth billions of dollars to use infrastructure belonging to Meta, according to media reports.
Microsoft said using infrastructure physically located in Europe could answer client concerns about dependence on US technology companies during a period of transatlantic tension. Microsoft President Brad Smith said in the statement that Europe should be able to access advanced AI without giving up control over data, operations or its digital future.
Microsoft said clients could run the Mistral models available through Copilot on Microsoft's cloud computing infrastructure or on their own local hardware.
