Peru ex-PM Betssy Chavez flies to Mexico, Sheinbaum says
Former Peruvian prime minister Betssy Chavez was being flown to Mexico aboard a Mexican military plane after Peru granted her safe passage, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Friday.
Sheinbaum told her daily news conference that Peru's new government had allowed Chavez to leave as a gesture of “goodwill” by newly inaugurated President Keiko Fujimori.
Chavez's asylum claim had been at the centre of a diplomatic dispute between Mexico and Peru. The two countries earlier announced that they were restoring diplomatic relations after a months-long rupture linked to Mexico's decision to grant her asylum.
Mexico and Peru said in a joint statement that they had agreed to resume diplomatic relations, citing historic bonds of brotherhood, friendship and cooperation.
