Meta releases open source AI model for laptops

Meta introduced a new AI model that can run on a personal computer as chief executive Mark Zuckerberg called for fewer barriers to open source artificial intelligence.

Zuckerberg said in an Instagram video on Monday, August 10, that Meta would open the weights for its latest AI model, allowing the public to download them. Weights are calculations or rules that help govern how an AI system behaves. He also said Meta would release a new class of open source models designed to run on a laptop.

In a long essay on artificial intelligence, Zuckerberg argued that advanced AI should be distributed widely rather than concentrated in a few institutions. He said Meta's goal should be for American open source models to be the best globally and said restrictions on foreign open source models were not an effective solution.

The launch comes during debate in the United States over whether access to AI technology should face tighter controls. US President Donald Trump signed a June executive order setting up a voluntary federal review of national security risks in advanced AI models before their release.

Zuckerberg also said Meta is launching a fund to support communities around its facilities amid local opposition to data center development. A Meta spokesperson said the fund, launched Monday, is $1 billion.

Meta has reaffirmed plans to keep spending heavily on the data centers and chips behind its AI work. It expects capital expenditures of up to $145 billion this year, nearly double what it spent in 2025.
