Maradona Hand of God ball could fetch $10m, auctioneer says

The ball Diego Maradona used to score his “Hand of God” goal at the 1986 World Cup could sell for $10 million at a United States auction this month, Heritage Auctions says.

The Texas-based auction house says the ball will be offered from August 21 to 23, with an opening bid of $2.5 million.

Maradona used the ball during Argentina's quarter-final win over England. He punched it into the net, but the referee missed the foul. After the match, Maradona said the goal was scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.”

Argentina went on to win the 1986 World Cup. Maradona died in November 2020.

Maradona's shirt from the Argentina-England match currently holds the record for the most expensive soccer shirt at $9.3 million.
