Luigi Mangione trial jurors to be anonymous

Jurors selected for Luigi Mangione's New York state murder trial will be anonymous, Judge Gregory Carro said at the final pretrial hearing on August 11, 2026, before jury selection begins September 8.

Mangione, 28, is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, 50, in New York in December 2024. He has been charged with murder in the state case and faces life in prison without parole if convicted.

Carro did not give reasons for the anonymity decision. Judges sometimes shield jurors' identities in highly publicized cases because of possible harassment or intimidation.

The judge also rejected defense concerns about limited public access to the trial, saying the court had not discussed or decided to exclude the public from the proceedings. More than 80 media outlets and many supporters of Mangione are expected to attend.

A separate federal trial is scheduled for January 2027 on two harassment counts related to stalking Thompson.
