Libya central bank governor resigns, Al-Ahrar says

Libya's central bank governor Naji Issa has resigned, private TV channel Al-Ahrar reported Monday, saying Issa had confirmed the resignation.

No reason was given in the report. Libya's eastern-based parliament, which appointed Issa and vice-governor Miree al-Barasee in September 2024, did not immediately comment.

Their appointment was part of a United Nations-backed deal that ended a standoff over Libya's oil production and a deep financial crisis. Issa succeeded Seddik al-Kabir, who had been criticised by officials close to Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah over his management of the bank and state funds.

Libya remains divided between Dbeibah's UN-recognised government in the west and a rival authority in the east backed by military strongman Khalifa Haftar. Most of Libya's revenue comes from oil, with production mainly in areas controlled by forces loyal to Haftar.
