Lake Kariba ferry carrying 95 capsizes in Zimbabwe

A ferry carrying 95 people capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe on Tuesday, police said, with rescue operations under way.

Police said the ferry, carrying 90 passengers and five crew members, capsized in the lake. They said more details would be released later.

Local media reported that the boat overturned after hitting strong waves. Local media also reported that several people were feared dead and that some passengers had been rescued, but the exact number was not known as of Tuesday evening.

The ferry provides transport between the northern town of Kariba and several islands and fishing camps. Lake Kariba lies on Zimbabwe's border with Zambia, more than 300 kilometres northeast of Harare.
