Kosovo PM Albin Kurti egged as parliament suspended

Kosovo's parliament was suspended on Saturday after opposition lawmaker Time Kadrijaj threw eggs at caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti during a session linked to the country's political deadlock.

Kadrijaj shouted “Shame on you!” as she threw the eggs at Kurti, who was sitting in the front row. The session chair called for the live feed to be cut, and security moved to protect Kurti.

Kurti later said that if having eggs thrown at him was the cost of dialogue, he was “happy to pay this price.”

The incident came as Kurti held days-long negotiations with opposition parties over a new president. His Vetevendosje party topped the June election with enough support to govern, but a two-thirds majority is needed to elect a president, leaving him dependent on talks with rivals.

A constitutional deadline to elect parliament's speaker expired on Friday. Rival lawmakers have threatened legal action over Kurti's request for more time to negotiate, and it remains unclear whether that delay request will be allowed.

The egging interrupted the session before a ruling could be made. Another session had not yet been set.
