Jeff Bezos group nears Liverpool stake deal, Sky says
Sky News reported on Monday that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is part of a consortium nearing a deal to buy roughly one-third of Liverpool Football Club.
Sky said the investor group is led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, and also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. It said Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group could announce a deal as soon as this week and that the investment would value the Premier League club at $6 billion.
Fenway Sports Group confirmed last month that Bhatia's group had approached it. An FSG spokesman said an investment consortium led, managed and represented by Bhatia had expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool.
FSG, which also owns the Boston Red Sox, bought Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million, or $405 million. It sold a minority stake in Liverpool in 2023 to US private equity group Dynasty Equity.
Uncertainty notes
The deal has not been confirmed as completed.
The exact size, timing and final terms of any investment have not been confirmed by Fenway Sports Group.
