Japan reusable rocket completes first launch and landing

Japan's space agency said its prototype reusable rocket completed its first lift-off and landing test on Saturday, reaching about 10 metres before touching down at a test site in Noshiro in the Akita region.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency said the flight lasted about 40 seconds. Takashi Ito, who led the launch, said the prototype had taken off and landed without problem, while adding that the agency would review data to fully assess the test.

Reusable rocket technology is aimed at lowering launch costs, because a rocket's first stage is among its most expensive parts. JAXA said the test came as Japan seeks to improve the competitiveness of its rocket industry.
