Italy earthquake areas get €100m in aid

Italy has released 100 million euros ($115 million) to help repair damage from the July 31 earthquake in the Naples area, Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said Tuesday.

The 4.7-magnitude quake was the strongest to hit the area in 40 years. It injured 26 people and forced about 700 people from their homes.

Most affected buildings and all evacuees were in Pozzuoli, west of Naples. Musumeci said firefighters had assessed 395 homes as uninhabitable. He said 568 evacuees had found new housing and 128 were still in hotels.

The area is the site of Europe's largest volcanic crater and has frequent seismic activity. The quake was followed by a night of lower-intensity aftershocks.
