Iran says four PJAK members killed in clash near Iraq border
Iranian authorities said on Monday that security forces killed four members of PJAK, an outlawed Kurdish group, during an armed clash in western Iran near the border with Iraq.
Police said in a statement carried by state television that border guards killed the four near Baneh in Kurdistan province.
The statement said officers found weapons and ammunition in their vehicle, including pistols, magazines, bullets and hand grenades.
The Kurdistan Free Life Party, known as PJAK, is designated as a terrorist organisation by Iran, Turkey and the United States.
PJAK is an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, and has carried out operations against the Iranian military since it was founded in 2004.
Iranian authorities arrested 11 alleged PJAK members in February on suspicion of carrying out acts of sabotage.
