Iran missiles intercepted by US military, CENTCOM says
US Central Command said Tuesday that American forces intercepted multiple ballistic missiles launched from Iran at US forces based in the Middle East, ending a several-day lull in attacks between the two countries.
CENTCOM said on X that Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched the missiles from Iran at 5:45 pm ET in what it called an attempted surprise attack.
“All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted,” CENTCOM said. It did not specify the areas Iran had targeted.
Both sides had held fire over the weekend after nearly two weeks of nightly US strikes on Iran and repeated Iranian missile and drone salvos by Tehran targeting Washington's allies around the Gulf.
The mid-July flareup in fighting came after Iran attacked several ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Oil prices had fallen during the weekend lull and as US President Donald Trump said there was a “good chance” of progress in negotiations to end the war.
