Indonesia ends search for 14 missing after boat sank

Indonesian authorities called off a 10-day search on Friday for survivors of a passenger boat that capsized off eastern Indonesia, with 14 people still missing.

The boat was carrying 76 people when it sank on July 15 while sailing near Selayar, a small island south of Sulawesi. Officials said 58 people were rescued alive and four bodies were found. Two survivors were found on an uninhabited island days after the sinking, and five others were rescued while floating in the sea.

Search and rescue official Andi Sultan said the whole search area had been covered and that no further signs of victims had been found.

Marine accidents are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, partly because of lax safety standards and unpredictable weather. In January, three Spanish tourists were confirmed dead after their boat sank off eastern Indonesia. A 10-year-old boy was listed as officially missing after authorities ended that search.
