Indonesia ends tsunami warning after 7.7 quake
Indonesia ended a tsunami warning issued after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Flores island on Saturday, a disaster official said.
Authorities had earlier urged residents in coastal areas of Flores to move to higher ground after the quake triggered the warning. Abdul Muhari, an official at the national disaster agency BNPB, told local broadcaster Kompas TV that people along Flores's northern coast and in southern areas and islands should carry out immediate self-evacuation, moving more than two kilometres inland or to hilly areas more than 10 metres high.
The US Geological Survey placed the shallow quake's epicentre off Flores's north coast, about 68 kilometres northwest of Ende. It said strong aftershocks followed in the same area, including one with a magnitude of 6.1.
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency had warned that the quake could generate tsunami waves in East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara. The earlier alert covered possible waves from 0.5 metres to three metres, while authorities said tsunami waves between 19 and 30 centimetres had been detected.
Residents in Maumere on Flores island evacuated to higher ground, and an AFP correspondent said the sea in the area appeared to be receding. Indonesian television showed hundreds of people evacuating in nearby Nagekeo regency and damaged buildings. Authorities had not reported any casualties in the earlier emergency reporting.
