Indonesia drag race crash kills eight, police say

A drag car veered out of control and crashed into spectators at a weekend race in Indonesia, killing eight people and injuring nine others, police said Monday.

The crash happened late Sunday during an organised drag car race in Kotamobagu, on Sulawesi Island.

North Sulawesi police chief Roycke Harry Langie said eight people had died, eight were in intensive care and one person had minor injuries. He said police had questioned several witnesses, including the driver.

Witness Areng Mokoginta told reporters on Sunday that the car skidded shortly after the start, swerved out of control and ploughed into spectators. Kotamobagu is about 180 kilometres southwest of Manado, the North Sulawesi capital.
