Indonesia appoints interim central bank chief after Perry Warjiyo resigns early

Indonesia has appointed senior deputy governor Destry Damayanti as interim central bank governor after Perry Warjiyo resigned before the end of his term, the government said.

State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi told reporters in Jakarta that President Prabowo Subianto had accepted Warjiyo's resignation. Warjiyo, who had led Bank Indonesia since 2018, tendered his resignation on July 25 and cited personal reasons. He did not elaborate.

His second term had been due to run until 2028. Prasetyo said the president thanked Warjiyo and expressed appreciation for his roughly seven years leading Bank Indonesia.

The change comes as Indonesia faces pressure from a weaker currency, higher energy costs linked to the Middle East war and wider economic strain. Bloomberg News reported that the currency has been Asia's worst-performing since the war began, losing around seven percent.

Bank Indonesia has raised its key interest rate by 100 basis points so far this year to 5.75 percent. Consumer prices rose 3.34 percent in June, while Indonesia's stock market has lost about a third of its value in 2026.
