Houthis claim drone strike on Saudi Aramco refinery

Yemen's Houthi rebels said on August 9 that they struck the Saudi Aramco refinery in Jizan, on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast, with a drone, after Saudi Arabia said a fire at the site had been extinguished with no injuries.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said the group had "succeeded in targeting" the refinery and described the strike as precise. He said the attack was launched in response to Saudi drone incursions into northwest Yemen.

Saudi Arabia's energy ministry said Saudi Aramco industrial security firefighting teams extinguished a fire that broke out at dawn at one of the refinery's facilities. The ministry did not give a cause for the blaze.

Aramco is Saudi Arabia's state-owned oil company. The Jizan facility was also targeted by Yemen's Houthi rebels in July.

The incident comes after a 2022 truce in Yemen's civil war appeared to collapse last month. The Houthis have announced a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia and have said they hit Saudi tankers in the Red Sea. The group controls large parts of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa and areas near Saudi Arabia's Red Sea provinces.
