Gianni Infantino in Colombia for inauguration amid FIFA crisis
FIFA president Gianni Infantino arrived in Cali on Friday for the inauguration of Colombia's incoming president Abelardo de la Espriella, while world football's governing body faces criticism over an abandoned World Cup investment plan.
Images published by the Colombian Football Federation showed Infantino accompanied by Alejandro Dominguez, his ally and the president of South American football body CONMEBOL.
Infantino's visit comes during a FIFA crisis triggered by a criticised proposal to allow private investment in the World Cup. FIFA has withdrawn the plan, but European football body UEFA on Thursday maintained its threat to boycott the World Cups.
Infantino is expected to seek a fourth and final term as FIFA president in an election in Rabat in March next year. He was due to attend De la Espriella's inauguration ceremony later Friday and, earlier in the day, visit a sports complex as part of a children's football festival.
Uncertainty notes
The item does not say whether Infantino had already attended the inauguration ceremony at the time of publication.
The outcome of the FIFA dispute over the abandoned World Cup investment proposal remains unresolved.
