Ghana says 1,000 more workers will return from South Africa

Ghana's government said 1,000 more Ghanaian migrant workers would start returning from South Africa on Sunday and Monday, after violent protests against migrants there.

The foreign ministry said late Saturday that special flights bringing the workers back would begin arriving on Sunday and Monday. It described the flights as the final phase of Ghana's evacuation of its nationals.

Ghanaian authorities have already brought 926 people out of South Africa and have strongly criticised the deadly events there. President John Mahama called on the African Union to put what he called xenophobic attacks in South Africa on its agenda, and accused the Pretoria government of not doing enough to stop them.

More than 160,000 mainly African foreigners have left South Africa since May, according to figures provided by different countries.
