French minister says Iran brought US strikes on itself
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Thursday that Iran had brought new US attacks on itself by violating a truce deal, while calling for calm between the two sides.
“It was Iran that, by targeting ships sailing in Omani waters, violated its own commitments as well as international law,” Barrot told TF1 television when asked about the latest US strikes.
Barrot said Iran had violated an agreement reached with the United States last month. He said such actions “must absolutely stop” so negotiations could continue.
The United States and Iran traded strikes for a second day Thursday as they battled over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. US forces said their latest attacks on Iran were aimed at its ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the strait, citing recent strikes against shipping in the waterway.
Iran said it had launched attacks against US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.
