Finland to host EU Arctic summit in September

Finland announced on Monday that it would host an EU leaders' summit on the Arctic in Rovaniemi on September 13-14, as the region draws growing geopolitical attention.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's office said the meeting aims to strengthen the European Union's common strategic approach to the Arctic as its geopolitical significance grows.

Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen are scheduled to attend, along with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and EU Council President Antonio Costa.

Orpo said the Arctic is an increasingly important part of Europe's security environment and that the EU has direct interests in its stability, security and sustainable development.

The region has gained strategic importance as melting sea ice has improved access to natural resources and opened new maritime routes. The Finnish announcement also cited recent attention on the Arctic following US President Donald Trump's claims about Greenland and China's move to send a container vessel through an Arctic route.
