Disney TikTok deal lets users add film extracts
The Walt Disney Co. said Wednesday it had signed a deal with TikTok allowing users of the video platform to add extracts of Disney films and characters.
Disney described the arrangement as a “first-of-its-kind agreement” and said it would bring creators to Disney+ through a curated feed of fan-created content featuring its characters and stories.
Details of the content-sharing accord were not disclosed in Disney's quarterly earnings statement. The company reported a seven percent rise in quarterly revenue to $25.2 billion.
Disney said the move was part of its strategy of using advanced technologies to support storytelling and increase monetisation and returns. It said it had already introduced vertical video feeds on Disney+ for previews of Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars productions, similar to TikTok's scrolling format.
Net profit in the financial quarter to June 27 fell to $2.8 billion from $5.9 billion a year earlier, reflecting in part a higher tax bill in the period.
