Costa Rica earthquakes cause minor damage, no injuries

Two shallow earthquakes struck central Costa Rica early Monday, including the capital San Jose, causing minor damage but no reported injuries, authorities said.

Costa Rica's National Seismological Network said the first quake was magnitude 5.4 and occurred at 1:37 a.m. at a depth of seven kilometers, with an epicenter in Coronado, a few kilometers northeast of San Jose. It said a second magnitude 4.8 quake was felt two minutes later in the same area at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The United States Geological Survey reported a single magnitude 4.9 quake at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Several aftershocks were felt during the morning in San Jose and other cities. The National Emergencies Commission reported a landslide on a road and some minor infrastructure damage. Authorities reported no fatalities or injuries.
