Colombia earthquake causes injuries and damage
A powerful earthquake shook Colombia and other Latin American countries on Monday, causing injuries and damage and prompting building evacuations in Bogota.
Colombia's geological service put the earthquake's magnitude at 6.6. The USGS put it at 7.4 and reported an epicenter 100 km underground in western Colombia.
The quake was felt in Ecuador and as far north as Panama. AFP reporters saw building evacuations in Bogota, where some people ran into the street as emergency sirens sounded.
The governor of Colombia's Choco province wrote on X that there were injuries and serious damage to buildings in the department's capital, Quibdo. The mayor of Cali, Colombia's third-largest city, also reported major damage.
News outlets aired footage of some buildings with their facades ripped off by the quake.
Twin earthquakes in Venezuela on June 24, measured at magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, killed more than 6,000 people and caused devastating property damage.
Update
The governor of Colombia's Choco province said there were injuries and serious building damage in Quibdo.
Cali's mayor reported major damage.
