China flash flood death toll rises to 25, state media says

Chinese state media reported Sunday that the death toll from a flash flood in northwest China had risen to 25, with 23 people injured.

The flood hit the Shuangshimen Scenic Area in mountainous southern Gansu on July 26. The tourist spot is popular with day campers and is known for natural stone arches, alpine meadows and mountain streams.

State media had initially reported 10 deaths and 23 injuries. Xinhua said China's national commission for disaster prevention would oversee an investigation into the flood.

Videos of the flooding showed torrents of water surging through a valley where several tents and cars were parked.

China has been hit by extreme weather this summer, with flooding across large parts of the country. In July, storms in Hubei province killed at least 11 people, while six people died and 130,000 were evacuated in the southern Guangxi region after several dams were breached following torrential rainfall. A landslide in Gansu's Dangchang County killed 21 that month.
