Chile restores diplomatic relations with Venezuela
Chile said on Thursday it was restoring diplomatic relations with Venezuela after severing ties with then-president Nicolas Maduro's administration in 2024.
“As of today, Chile and Venezuela are beginning a new phase,” Chilean President Jose Antonio Kast said.
Kast said the agreement would allow the two countries to move forward on challenges involving security, migration and economic development.
Venezuela's government ordered the withdrawal of its diplomatic staff from Chile and six other countries in July 2024 after they called for a review of election results that declared Maduro victorious.
Several countries have resumed relations with Caracas since Maduro was ousted by US forces in January.
Kast wants to expel about 330,000 undocumented people from Chile. The absence of diplomatic ties with Venezuela had been an obstacle to that objective.
