ChatGPT use shifts from answers to tasks, OpenAI says

OpenAI said new country-by-country ChatGPT data shows people are increasingly using the AI tool to complete tasks and create work, rather than only to seek answers.

The company said it is publishing national usage data for the first time through OpenAI Signals, a data and research hub from its Economic Research Team.

OpenAI said people using ChatGPT at work are more than twice as likely to use it to produce an output or perform a task, such as writing, coding, editing or analysis, than people outside work. It said use outside work remains more exploratory, with information-seeking still the largest category.

The company said AI adoption is becoming more global, with countries across Latin America, Africa and Oceania narrowing the gap with early adopters. It also said multimedia is the fastest-growing use case worldwide, accounting for 7.8% of messages and more than one in ten messages in countries including Brazil and Colombia.

OpenAI said usage among people over 35 is rising in nearly every country. In France and Czechia, it said that age group's share of messages increased by more than 10 percentage points over the past year.

The dataset reflects messages sent through ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts, which OpenAI said are generally managed by individuals rather than organisations.
