Canadian NATO intern arrested in Belgium on spying suspicions

A Canadian citizen of Chinese origin was arrested in Belgium on suspicion of carrying out espionage while working as an intern at NATO, Belgian authorities said. The Federal Prosecutor's Office said the intern worked at the US-led defence alliance's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, known as SHAPE, in Mons. Prosecutors said she was arrested on Thursday and is suspected of spying for a third country and of being a member of a criminal organisation. The office said SHAPE security services had noticed the suspect and reported the matter to the General Intelligence and Security Service. Prosecutors did not specify the nature of the alleged spying. After taking up the case, the prosecutor's office assigned the investigation to federal judicial police in Charleroi. Police searched the suspect's home and workplace on Thursday, and a magistrate issued an arrest warrant on Friday.
