Brazil police recover stolen Matisse engravings

Brazilian police have recovered eight engravings by French artist Henri Matisse that were stolen from a Sao Paulo library last year, officials said.

The works, from Matisse's limited-edition art book "Jazz", were found at a home in Sao Bernardo do Campo, near Sao Paulo. Police estimated their value at $200,000.

Officers arrested a man who police said was keeping the works for the alleged mastermind of the theft. Police said he would face charges of receiving stolen goods and illegal weapon possession.

The alleged mastermind was arrested in April, and a woman has also been arrested in the case.

Police said an organised gang overpowered a security guard and an elderly couple at the Mario de Andrade Library, took the Matisse engravings and other items from a glass dome, and fled. Five works by Brazilian artist Candido Portinari stolen in the same robbery have not been recovered.
