Belgium road tax to start in May 2027

Belgium will introduce a road tax on May 1, 2027, and foreign drivers crossing the country will also have to pay, the country's three regions announced Friday.

Drivers will need to register their vehicle and pay for a pass. Day passes will be available for drivers transiting Belgium.

An annual pass for a zero-emission car would cost 90 euros, while passes for higher-polluting vehicles would cost up to 125 euros. Cars detected by road cameras without a paid pass will face a 70-euro fine.

Belgium does not currently charge drivers to use its highways. Wallonia transport minister Francois Desquesnes said everyone who uses the roads should contribute to their maintenance.
