Austria hits record 40.8C in Vienna heat spike
Austria set a new all-time temperature record on Tuesday when 40.8C was measured in Vienna, national weather agency GeoSphere Austria said.
The reading was made in Stammersdorf, in the east of the capital. GeoSphere Austria said it broke the previous national record of 40.5C, recorded on August 8, 2013 at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in eastern Austria.
The latest heat came after months of unusually hot and dry weather. GeoSphere Austria said Austria had its fourth-warmest July on record and that precipitation deficits reached 90 percent at some measuring stations.
The agency said apricots have begun ripening about 20 days earlier than the average observed from 1961 to 1991, which it described as an example of global warming's effect on crops.
Austria had also already recorded its longest heatwave in June.

GeoSphere Austria said the 40.8C reading in Stammersdorf broke the previous national record of 40.5C set on August 8, 2013 at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.

The previous Austrian temperature record was 40.5C, measured on August 8, 2013 at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in eastern Austria.
