Australia raises concern with China over South Pacific missile test

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong raised concern with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi over Beijing's test of a nuclear-capable missile in the South Pacific during a meeting in Manila late Tuesday.

The missile was fired this month from a Chinese submarine and carried a dummy warhead. It travelled far into the Pacific Ocean.

In opening remarks to Wang, Wong expressed concern about the missile test, safe and professional military conduct, and the need for transparency and reassurance about intent.

Australia has previously said it did not receive enough notice of the test. A dozen Pacific Island countries have also denounced it, saying it violated the region's wish to remain free of nuclear weapons testing.

Monitors said the rocket appeared to have landed in the ocean somewhere between Solomon Islands, Nauru and Tuvalu.
