AI model review plan heads to White House meeting

The White House will host a meeting on Tuesday with AI executives to discuss a new voluntary government review system for the most powerful AI models, an administration official said.

The official did not say who would attend the talks. The system was outlined in an executive order that President Donald Trump signed on June 2.

The framework would allow companies such as OpenAI, Google or Anthropic to give the government access to their most powerful models for up to 30 days before a planned public release.

The order followed concerns over Anthropic's Mythos model, which the company initially declined to release publicly because it could expose vulnerabilities in computer systems, including those used by banks, governments and hospitals. Mythos was later released with use restrictions.

In June, the Commerce Department ordered Anthropic to suspend all foreign access to its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, citing national security concerns linked to a reported jailbreak, in which users bypassed safety guardrails. Anthropic had to take both models offline entirely for more than two weeks before access was gradually restored.

The review plan marks a shift for the Trump administration, which had previously taken a hands-off approach to AI development on the grounds that the government should not hinder innovation in competition with China.
