UK Ebola medic flown from DR Congo for treatment

A British medic who tested positive for Ebola while working on the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been flown to London for specialist treatment, the UK government said Thursday.

The unnamed UK citizen is being treated at the Royal Free Hospital, which the government said has a high-level isolation unit designed for such cases and protocols to prevent contact with the public.

Renu Bindra, deputy director of the all hazards public health response team at the UK Health Security Agency, said the risk to the wider public remains low.

Africa's top health agency says the latest Ebola outbreak has killed more than 5,300 people, most of them in DR Congo. Last month, Nigeria reported an Ebola case involving a Swiss woman who was flown to Geneva for treatment.

Uncertainty notes

The medic's identity and condition beyond testing positive and receiving specialist treatment are not specified.
