Sudan says drones from Ethiopia killed or wounded hundreds

Sudan accused Ethiopia of enabling drone attacks from its territory that it said have killed or wounded hundreds of civilians and soldiers since mid-February.

Sudan's army-led Transitional Sovereignty Council said in a report that it had documented 70 attacks between February 15 and October 27 involving 187 one-way attack drones and 82 munitions fired from drones.

The report said the attacks killed or wounded 484 civilians. It said 176 Sudanese soldiers were killed and another 200 were wounded.

Ethiopia denies Sudanese military accusations that it has aided the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has been at war with Sudan's army since April 2023. Ethiopia has accused Sudan's army of backing rebels linked to the Tigray People's Liberation Front, an allegation Khartoum rejects.

The Sudanese report alleged that drones had taken off from Ethiopian territory to strike Sudanese cities and civilians, naming launch sites including Asosa airport, the Kurmuk-Gizen border area and Bahir Dar air base.

It said the campaign had intensified recently, with October accounting for 28 attacks and 97 of the recorded one-way drones. It cited an October 9 attack on displaced families in Wad el-Mahi, in Blue Nile State near the Ethiopian border, that it said killed 30 civilians and wounded 100 others.

Sudan said it would file complaints with the UN Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council, while reserving what it described as its right to self-defence under international law.

The UN says more than 1,100 people were killed in drone attacks across Sudan in the first half of the year.

Uncertainty notes
