Serbia student list wins majority in final results

Serbia's electoral commission has confirmed that a student-led movement won an overall majority in the October 25 snap election, ending the 14-year rule of Aleksandar Vucic's SNS party.

Final results released on Thursday showed the leaderless student list won 53 percent of the vote and 140 seats in the 250-seat parliament. Vucic's outgoing right-wing SNS won 39 percent and 103 seats, the central election commission said.

The remaining seven seats went to several ethnic-minority parties.

The final results were delayed by 10 days after irregularities forced re-runs last Sunday in several dozen polling stations. The re-runs did not change the student list's majority.

Turnout reached 70 percent among Serbia's 6.4 million registered voters.

The student-backed movement grew out of two years of protests sparked by the 2024 collapse of a railway station canopy in Novi Sad that killed 16 people. The disaster was widely blamed on corruption and triggered some of Serbia's largest protests since the fall of Slobodan Milosevic in 2000.
