Pakistan gunmen kill two police on polio security duty
Gunmen killed two police officers and wounded another in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday while the officers were travelling on security duty for a polio vaccination team, police official Ali Rehman Khan said.
Khan said militants opened fire on the police vehicle in Mohmand district near the Afghan border. He said no polio vaccination staff were in the vehicle. No group immediately claimed responsibility.
In a separate incident in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Tank district, four police officers on their way to provide security for a polio vaccination team were abducted on Monday, district police official Abdul Samad said. He said efforts were under way to recover them.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries where polio remains endemic. Militants have killed hundreds of police officers and health workers over the past decade as part of a campaign against the Pakistani state.
Uncertainty notes
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the Mohmand shooting.
Police did not specify which group they believed was behind the attack.
The status of the four abducted police officers in Tank district remains unresolved.
