John Frieda, celebrity hairstylist, dies at 75

John Frieda, the British celebrity hairstylist whose salons and haircare products helped build an international beauty business, has died aged 75, his salon announced on November 4.

The John Frieda salon said on Instagram that Frieda died peacefully surrounded by his family. It described him as "a true icon of the hair industry".

Born in 1951, Frieda came from a family of hairdressers and trained at the House of Leonard salon in London. He became a hairstylist to stars and fashion magazines in the 1970s before opening salons that grew into an international haircare empire.

His clients included Jackie Kennedy, Princess Diana, Twiggy, Mick Jagger, Nicole Kidman and Madonna. His John Frieda Professional Hair Care brand, known for the Frizz-Ease line, was sold to Japanese cosmetics group Kao in 2002.

Frieda was married twice, first to pop singer Lulu, with whom he had one child. Cetera Lamb, creative director at his salon, said the industry had lost "a true legend, a real maverick in hairdressing".
