Iran foreign minister calls Saudi counterpart, IRNA says

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone call Thursday with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan to discuss regional issues, Iranian state media IRNA reported.

IRNA said the two ministers discussed the latest regional developments and diplomatic efforts to establish stability in the region. It gave no further details on the talks.

IRNA also reported that Araghchi spoke with the foreign ministers of Qatar and Oman, both of which have been involved in mediation efforts in the war with the United States. He also held conversations with his Turkish, Jordanian and Kuwaiti counterparts, according to IRNA.

Iran and Saudi Arabia restored ties in 2023 after a freeze, but have been at odds over the war in Yemen. The Houthis are fighting the Saudi-backed internationally recognised government and have repeatedly launched attacks on the kingdom. Iran has denied involvement in the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, who are part of what Tehran calls its "axis of resistance".

Uncertainty notes

IRNA did not give further details on the substance or outcome of the talks.
